MB Selangor issue: PAS has no third candidate yet

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS has yet to have a third candidate to be considered as the new Selangor Menteri Besar, said PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali.

He said that so far PAS still maintained the two names for consideration as the candidate for Menteri Besar and would call for a meeting if the third name was needed.

However, he said, the party would wait for the letter from the palace of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah before making any decision or further statement.

When contacted by Bernama here yesterday, he declined to comment if there were any names from PAS itself.

On Aug 17, PAS decided to nominate PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali as the new Menteri Besar besides the existing candidate, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president, Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

However, after the Pakatan Rakyat Presidential Council meeting on the same day, the opposition coalition comprising PAS, PKR and DAP had agreed that Dr Wan Azizah be named as the sole candidate to replace Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

The Selangor political crisis saw a new development yesterday when Sultan Sharafuddin postponed accepting Abdul Khalid’s resignation as the Selangor Menteri Besar until a new appointment had been determined.

The Ruler also told the leaders of the Pakatan Rakyat component parties – PAS, PKR and DAP – to nominate more than two names from each party as the candidate for the Menteri Besar to facilitate him in deciding on the eligible candidate and subsequently give his consent to appoint the candidate felt qualified to be the Menteri Besar.

Nonetheless, PKR and the DAP in their joint statement yesterday said that they would still nominate one name, that is, Dr Wan Azizah as the sole candidate. — Bernama
