Public question why Gawai billboard still up

MIRI: Members of the public are questioning why the Miri City Council (MCC) has yet to take down the National Gawai Dayak Celebration billboard.

Photo shows the Gawai Dayak billboard, which has yet to be taken down.

Andi Mustapha from Kampung Pujut Adong said he was surprised to see that the Gawai Dayak billboard is still there although the month of August is nearly over.

He said the billboard should instead feature something on National Day, which will be celebrated on Sunday.

“I think other road users also agree with me because MCC is not concerned about the celebrations and occasions in Malaysia. They should be more alert,” he complained yesterday.

He added that after Gawai Dayak there was the fasting month and then Hari Raya Aidilfitri, but neither was commemorated by MCC with a billboard.

Julias Edwin from Senadin agreed that MCC should be more proactive.

He said if it is Chinese New Year, Christmas or Hari Raya Aidilfitri, then MCC should put up the appropriate billboards.

“Until today, if not mistaken, there are three billboards for the Gawai Dayak celebration put up near Miri City Fan, near the small roundabout going to Miri Airport and towards Krokop, which are still there even though it is already the month of August.

“Please be alert and concerned towards the celebrations of the people in Miri,” he said.
