KUCHING: The inaugural Sarawak Grand Championship that offers the Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem Challenge Trophy and Puan Sri Dato Jamilah Anu Chalenge Trophy has attracted 240 golfers including 12 from Sabah and one from Kuala Lumpur.
To be held at the Sarawak Golf Club (KGS) from Aug 30 to Sept 1, the event is sanctioned by the Sarawak Golf Association (SGA).
“We received a very good response from golfers in Sarawak and also in Sabah which goes to show that this tournament has the good potential of becoming the premier golf event to be organised locally,” said organising chairman Hoan Kee Hock.
He said this after the organisers received the challenge trophies from the chief minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem and his wife Puan Sri Dato Jamilah Anu at the State Legislative Assembly building in Petra Jaya yesterday.
On behalf of SGA, Hoan thanked Adenan for giving his consent to be the patron of the Sarawak Grand Championship.
“We put into record our deepest appreciation to the Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem and his wife Puan Sri Dato Jamilah Anu for their support and encouragement in organising this inaugural event,” he said.
Hoan, also SGA president, said the local participants are from KGS, Sarawak Junior Golf and First Association, Samarahan Country Club, Damai Golf and Country Club, Prisons Golf Club, Sibu Golf Club, Bintulu Golf Club and Miri Golf Club while entries were also received from Sabah Golf & Country Club (SGCC) and Keningau Golf Club.
The event is opened to golfers with course handicap of 14 or below for the men’s category and course handicap of 24 and below for the women’s category.
The men’s competition is at the Matang/ Santubong Course at KGS while the women’s is at Siol/ Demak Course.
This championship is to be decided by stroke-play over three rounds of 18 holes game and the overall champion is based on total Gross score taking precedence over Nett score.
There are 15 prizes to be won in the men’s Gross event and eight prizes offered to winners in the Nett event while in the women’s category there are also attractive prizes to be won including the top daily Gross and Nett scores.
