Roadside trees that topple easily might be replaced

KUCHING: The government will look at the possibility of replacing roadside trees that are prone to being uprooted by strong winds.

The strong winds on Wednesday evening uprooted trees which toppled and damaged at least nine houses at Kampung No.5 at Jalan Ajibah Abol.

Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said he would bring up the matter to Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) which is in charge of the trees.

“Perhaps we are looking at replanting with trees that have stronger roots to withstand strong winds,” said the Satok assemblyman.

The trees had been around for more than 30 years and he will get the opinion of a horticulturist.

“I also advise houseowners to chop down trees located within the compound of their houses if they are in danger of toppling,” he said.

He will met DBKU Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Julai to discuss the matter today (Aug 29).

Abang Johari said he would also look into how to assist the nine house owners to repair their damaged homes.

A victim Idris Bujang, 46, said he was on the way home when the incident occurred.

“It was raining heavily and the wind was very strong. It was a scary experience and I had to console my five-year-old niece who cried throughout the incident,” Idris said.

Part of the roofing on his house was blown away exposing furniture and other items in his house which were damaged by the rain.
