KUCHING: Two suspects who broke into a petrol station was lucky to have escaped following an attempt by Fire and Rescue (Bomba) personnel to capture them yesterday.

The incident happened about 12.15am at a petrol station at Jalan Setia Raja here.

The two men were said to have broken a front glass door of the petrol station with a hammer in the break-in attempt.

Fortunately, Bomba personnel from a station nearby realised that a break-in was being attempted at the petrol station and immediately proceeded to try to nab the two suspects.

“When they (the robbers) realise we were coming, one of the suspects tried to flee by speeding off on a motorcycle but we pulled the steel chain that was used to close the entrance way to the petrol station.

“The suspect tried to drive across the steel chain but fell off from his motorcycle. He then ran toward a kampung that is not far away.

“The other suspect who was hiding in the shop managed to escape while we were busy chasing after the one outside,” said the Bomba personnel who only wanted to be known as Wong.

According to him, they immediately informed the police about the incident.

“A Yamaha SS motorcycle and hammer left by the suspects at the scene were handed over to the police to facilitate investigation,” said Wong. Police also checked the scene for evidence.

“The suspects managed to flee but left the red Yamaha behind which was reported missing on July 27 in Padungan,” said Kuching district deputy police chief Superintenden Fauzilan Abdul Aziz.

Members of the public with information about the two suspects are requested to report to the nearest police station.
