Rentap House win SMK Riam sports meet

MIRI: Rentap House emerged the overall champion of SMK Riam’s Annual Inter-House Sportsmeet yesterday.

The second place went to Jugah House, followed by Rosli Dhoby House and Sharif Masahor House in third and fourth place respectively.

In the Senior Category, Ahmad Azizi of Syarif Masahor House and Nur Hafizah of Rentap House were awarded the Sportsman and Sportswoman titles respectively.

For the Junior Category, the sportsman title went to Mohd Norazri Norman of Rentap House while Jacqueline Jalong of Rentap House won the sportswoman title. Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, SMK Riam Parents Teachers Association (PTA) chairman Balan Bandar thanked the teachers and students of the school for contributing to the success of the sportsmeet.

“I am confident that through this annual sports, we can encourage our students to be more active in sports, and which is in line with our Prime Minister’s call for each students to participate in at least one sport,” he said.

He said everyone should realise that sports is an important component in the development of a student as it educates them on failure, frustration, excitement and becoming winners.

“Apart from that, sports also teach our students about teamwork, sportsmanship and humbleness that helped makes them good adults in the future.

“We should embrace these values in order to bring out the best of humanity and work together towards the betterment of the society,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, SMK Riam principal Aziah Zaki who spoke earlier said the sportsmeet gave opportunity for the students to showcase their talents in sports.

“Sports is important for not only because it is good for our physical body, but it is also good for our mind.

“This sports event that is participated by students of various races and religion also promotes unity and racial tolerance among students, teachers and parents,” she added.
