Siblings missing after falling into Perak river

SUNGAI SIPUT: Two siblings are reported missing after they were believed to have fallen into the Perak River and swept away near Batu Musafat, Bekut here at 5pm yesterday.

Meor Mohamad Izzat Meor Mazinun, 13, a student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tok Muda Abdul Aziz and his brother Meor Mohammad Fahmi, 11, a pupil at Sekolah Kebangsaan Seroli had earlier gone fishing in the river.

Their father Meor Mazinun Muin, 43, said his sons had upon returning from school at 3.30 pm yesterday, asked permission from their mother to go fishing.

He said his sons went with two other boys who wanted to go swimming.

“My sons do not know how to swim. We understand the elder had slipped into the river and his brother tried to save him. Their friends rushed to seek the help of residents at the nearby jetty,” he said.

Sungai Siput Fire and Rescue Station chief Zul Azman Jamaluddin said 142 volunteers were involved in the search and rescue operation.

He said the operation is concentrated on the incident site, to two kilometres downstream.

“If the boys are not found by tomorrow, we will expand the search area,” he said. — Bernama
