The incident at around 5.45am occurred near Sungai Telong, Suai, Niah, about 100km from here.

Miri deputy Police chief Supt Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the two bodies had been brought to Miri Hospital morgue for a post-mortem.

The deceased had been identified as Elexander Ngerantar, 37, and Winnie Mangku 35, both from Taman Tunku here.

They sustained serious injuries on their heads and bodies in the accident.

“They were heading towards Miri from Bintulu when the fatal mishap occurred,” said Stanley.

The lorry had a breakdown and was parked by the roadside when the car, driven by Elexander, rammed into the rear.

The lorry driver and two of his co-workers who were asleep inside the trailer, were shocked to hear a loud ‘bang’ from the rear, as if ‘something’ rammed the trailer.

Upon inspection, they saw the car which crashed into the lorry’s rear with two people in it. They immediately called Batu Niah clinic for help.

Winnie was seated at the front passenger’s seat.

According to sources, there was no emergency signage placed near the lorry as a warning indicator for approaching motorists.

The dark road also has no street lighting.

One fire engine from Similajau station rushed to the scene, arriving at about 7am.

It took firemen from Bintulu several minutes to extricate the two bodies from the wreckage, as the car came to grief underneath the lorry.
