SIMUNJAN: Spearheaded by its signature Gumpey prawn noodle, Simunjan District has the potential to become a popular destination for tourists with its exquisite cuisine, says Assistant Minister of Entrepreneur Development Datuk Naroden Majais.

Beyond the king’s ransom charged for a sizeable bowl of Gumpey prawn noodle (Mee Udang Gumpey), available only at Kpg Gumpey, Gedong, in Simunjan, Naroden added that the district is also famous for its rattan mattresses, which have been traditionally made by both Iban and Bidayuh weavers.

“Simunjan’s rattan mattresses is something unique and beautiful based on the rich Iban cultural heritage here in Simunjan,” Naroden said at the Simunjan District Mattress Weaving Craftsmanship Course programme held at Dewan Mesra here yesterday.

He also hoped more local entrepreneurs in Sarawak can produce replicas and mascots of the state’s orang utan, proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, longhouses, Bidayuh baruk (head house), ‘tambang’ boats for the tourism market.

The assistant minister added that Sarawak has been successful in attracting tourists as it has many ecotourism products such as its nature, along with its multi-racial and multi-cultural society.

“On top of that, Sarawak is renowned internationally as it is also a very stable state despite of its very diverse society,” he said.

Naroden said the future of its handicrafts industry lies in the increasing number of tourist arrivals to the state.

More than 50 women from throughout Simunjan District participated in the weaving course.
