MIRI: More than 200 students from nine secondary schools and 10 primary schools are expected to participate in the upcoming wushu and tang soo do selection tournament at Miri Wushu Association of Miri Division (MWAMD) training centre here on Sept 14.

Master Tiong Ching Chiong, headcoach at the centre, told The Borneo Post yesterday that athletes would be selected to represent Miri in the state-level 2014 Lion and Dragon Dance and Wushu Championship to be held in Kuching from Sept 19-21.

“We will be selecting two teams from the secondary schools and one team from primary schools. Each team consists of 12 athletes which means we are sending 36 athletes to Kuching for the championship,” he said.

Tiong, who is also MWAMD chairman, said the association was interested in sending not only experienced athletes for tournaments but also the younger ones to prove themselves.

“Every time we organise tournaments here, we received huge support from the students both in Wushu and Tang So Do. We are looking forward to increase the number of students in the coming years.”

He revealed that more than 200 students have become wushu members while over 100 have signed up for tang soo do recently.
