Another 24-hour convenience store falls victim to armed robbers

KUCHING: Another 24-hour convenience store in the city has fallen victim to armed robbers after two men made off with a cash register machine early yesterday morning.

The suspects being brought to the district police headquarters for interrogation following their arrest.

Part of the stolen items the police have recovered.

The latest incident- the fourth in less than three weeks – occurred at Jalan Song Thian Cheok when two men clad in dark clothing and motorcycle helmets rushed inside around 3.30am and pointed a knife at one of its workers.

One of the robbers then grabbed the cash register and pulled at it until the cord snapped before escaping with his accomplice, who was standing guard at the entrance.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which lasted less than a minute. The total loss is estimated at around RM7,000.

Police personnel were present at the scene to investigate and have obtained footage from the store’s security camera for further analysis.

Yesterday armed robbery was the fourth such incident to befall the 24-hour convenience store chain in the space of three weeks, with outlets at Mile 3, Jalan McDougall and Satok all falling victims to armed persons.

Apart from an on-the-spot arrest made by police at the Satok outlet, no breakthrough has been made in connection with the other robberies.

Separately, two men were arrested by police early yesterday morning for a number of office break-ins in the city.

The two local suspects were picked up by a team from district police headquarters around 5am following a tip-off, and subsequently led police to the recovery of television sets, computers and other electrical appliances.

Sources said the suspects and three other men, who had been arrested earlier, were believed to be responsible for several break-ins at offices and residential areas.
