Driver killed, four passengers injured

The condition of the Perodua Viva after it hit a lamp post at Jalan Kepayan.

KOTA KINABALU: The 34-year-old driver of a Perodua Viva car died on the spot when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a lamp post at Jalan Kepayan in front of the Sabah police headquarters here yesterday.

The driver was identified as Sidi bin Ogoi from Kampung Bobot, Kota Belud.

City police chief ACP M. Chandra said the driver and three passengers were heading from Petagas to Kota Kinabalu when the accident happened about 4.30am.

“The driver and front seat passenger were thrown out nearly 50 metres from the vehicle. As a result, the driver was confirmed to have died on the spot while the passenger suffered injuries and was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH),” he said.

The other three passengers, all men aged between 18 and 28, suffered varying degree of injuries. The 28-year-old sustained serious injuries to his face and limbs and had yet to regain consciousness, the 20-year-old broke his back bone and injured his limbs while the 18-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries to his limbs.

Chandra said the cause of accident was still under investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
