PR1MA plans ‘rumah ibu’ project for low-income earners

KUALA LUMPUR: The 1Malaysia Housing Programme (PR1MA) plans to build ‘rumah ibu’ (mother homes) next year to help low-income earners and young people to own their own homes.

These are one-room units but with the infrastructure and piping system of a three-room house.

PR1MA chairman Tan Sri Dr. Jamaludin Jarjis said the 650-square foot studio-style units are based on traditional dwellings, and with better household income the owners could add more rooms and expand the house to up to 1,000 square feet.

“Before, most houses had just one room, and when the children had grown and the family had become more financially stable, the parents would renovate the house and add more rooms, and we will follow this practice in the ‘rumah ibu’ project,” he told the media after the signing of an agreement between PR1MA and Darulaman Realty Sdn Bhd here yesterday.

Jamaludin however stressed that the project would only go ahead on sufficient demand from the public and after receiving feedback from applicants for PR1MA housing.
