TAWAU: A study on all aspects, particularly the socio-economy of the Muslim community in Borneo, should be conducted to determine their potential.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the results of the study could also be used to develop the Muslim community on the island.

“One of the resources which is yet to be fully explored is the wakaf (endowment for religious purposes), which is seen as effective in developing the socio-economy of the Muslim community and boosting missionary activities in the region as a whole.

“As such, let us all endeavour to play an important role in boosting and empowering Islam in Borneo.”

Musa said this in his speech text, which was read out by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan, at the Seventh Borneo International Islamic Conference here on Wednesday night.

The two-day conference from Wednesday, saw 70 working papers on Islamic issues in Borneo being presented by representatives from Kalimantan, Brunei, the Philippines, Sarawak and Sabah.

The conference was organised by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sabah campus and UiTM Sarawak campus.
