MIRI: Samling Group founder Tan Sri Yaw Teck Seng was the sole recipient of the Datuk Amar Bintang Kenyalang award from Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud in conjunction with his official birthday yesterday.

The award carries the title Datuk Amar.

Yaw previously received the Panglima Gemilang Bintang Kenyalang award, which carries the title Datuk on Sept 16, 1990, from then Head of State the late Tun Datuk Patinggi Ahmad Zaidi Adruce.

On Oct 27, 2010, he was conferred the Panglima Setia Mahkota, which carries the title Tan Sri by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.

Yaw has always played a role in the progress and development of this city. His visionary mind for business successfully drove Samling to diverse business interests from forest resource management to oil palm plantations, property development and automotive businesses globally.

As an effort to give back to society, he formed the Yaw Teck Seng Foundation (YTSF) during his 70th birthday in 2008.

Incorporated on Aug 25, 2008, YTSF is a non-profit charitable organisation limited by guarantee and without share capital.

The main income of the foundation is from contributions and donations, which are then administered for educational, charitable and environmental purposes.

Its specific mission is to provide funds, grants, financial assistance and support for the establishment, enlargement or improvement of schools, universities or other educational establishments in Malaysia; and to award scholarships, bursaries, study loans, research grants and other forms of financial assistance tenable at any school, university or educational establishment to poor and needy Malaysians.

In addition, the foundation provides financial assistance to poor and needy Malaysians seeking early detection for the treatment of life-threatening diseases by providing access to medical facilities and also to aid those who are already afflicted with such illnesses.

In an effort to promote public awareness of the importance of protection, preservation and sound management of environment, the foundation has also given funds for conservation, research, development, protection, enhancement and support of nature and natural resources.
