KUCHING: Newcomer SK Kenyalang and SMK Sungai Tapang emerged champions of the primary schools and secondary schools competition respectively in the 1st Kuching Division Inter Schools Wushu Tournament at SJK Chung Hua No. 5 school hall yesterday.

SK Kenyalang, which only introduced wushu in March this year, captured nine gold, three silver and two bronze medals to top the 14-school competition.

In second place were SJK Chung Hua No. 2 with their medal haul of 7-8-1 while SJK Chung Hua No. 3 came in third with 7-3-1.

Fourth were SJK Chung Hua No. 4 with 4-4-8.

Other teams in this section were SJK Sam Hap Hin, SJK Chung Hua Sungai Lubak, SJK Chung Hua No. 5, St Joseph’s Private School, SJK Chung Hua No. 6, SMK Chung Hua Pending, SJK Batu Kawa, SK Song Kheng Hai, SK Sacred Heart Semeba and SJK Chung Hua Batu 4 1/2.

In the secondary school section, wushu powerhouse SMK Sungai Tapang from Samarahan were the runaway winners with their haul of 17 gold, six silver and one bronze.

SMK Kuching finished second after bagging six  gold and two silver while another newcomer St Joseph’s Private School, who had only started wushu training in mid-June, came in third with three gold and one silver.

The fourth-placed team was SMK Bandar Kuching No. 1 who garnered 2-1-1.

Those who also participated in the secondary schools section were SMK DPHA Gapor Stampin, SMK Green Road, SMK Sungai Maong, Chung Hua Middle School No. 1, Lodge School and SMK Batu Kawa.

Tadika Alfa Q-Dees were the best performers in the kindergarten category after they captured two gold medals.

Jointly organised by the Kelab Wushu Bandar Kuching and SJK Chung Hua No.5, the tournament is aimed at unearthing new talents who will be absorbed into the Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS) development programme.

Another objective of the tournament was to select athletes to represent Kuching at the Sarawak Wushu Championship to be held in Miri later this year.

The event is sanctioned and supported by WFS and the Sarawak State Sports Council.

Chairman of the Board of Management for Chung Hua Primary Schools No. 1-6, Kuching Wong Tiong Hock graced the opening and gave away the trophies and medals.

Among those present were organising chairperson Ho It Chin, Wushu Federation of Sarawak deputy president James Ting and Kelab Wushu Bandar Kuching president Charlie Kho.
