‘SMS alert for donors if blood stock level hits yellow zone’

SIBU: Registered blood donors here would be alerted via SMS if the stock level reaches the yellow zone.

According to Sibu Hospital director Dr Ngian Hie Ung, yellow indicates the level that necessitates for action, while green means it is still comfortable.

“And red stands for critical,” she told The Borneo Post when met at the sidelines of Kelab KTS Sibu’s blood donation drive held at Star Mega Mall here yesterday.

Dr Ngian disclosed that the hospital’s current stock level was slightly above the yellow zone.

“There are a lot of donors here, but not many are regular,” she said, explaining that ‘regular donors’ referred to those donating twice or more in a year.

She added that a person could donate four times yearly.

However, she admitted that it was difficult to get donors during festive months.

Meanwhile, Dr Ngian highlighted that Sibu Hospital also catered to the needs of smaller hospitals such as those in Daro and Dalat.

As such, she hoped that organisations in the central region would be more active in ensuring that there would be adequate supply of blood.

In addition, she also mentioned that Sibu Hospital also functioned as a blood screening centre for the region.

“This means that blood collected from donation drives in places like Kapit, Mukah and Sarikei will be sent here for screening,” she said.
