KOTA KINABALU: A thief, clad in black and wearing a ‘Superhero・face mask, found it was futile trying to prise open the automatic teller machines (ATM) at the AmBank Berhad premises in Damai, Luyang yesterday.
In the incident, the thief entered the bank’s ATM room around 4.20 pm yesterday, which was Malaysia Day and and a public holiday, in an attempt to force open the ATM’s vault to steal the money.
Prior to his daring attempt to break into the machines in broad daylight, the thief sprayed white paint on the two units of closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs) installed inside the premises.
He then tried to prise open one of the four ATMs inside the room, but after failing in the first attempt, he proceeded to the other machines.
He was, however, successful in opening one of the machine metal door but was unable break into the vault containing the cash money.
After his unsuccessful attempts, the man left the bank premises empty-handed.
City police chief, ACP M. Chandra, when met at the scene yesterday, said that the police are still investigating into the case in effort to identity of the would-be robber.
“Based on bank’s CCTV camera footage, a man was seen clad in black entering the bank wearing a face mask. The would-be robber then blanked out the CCTV cameras by spraying it with white paint before attempting to break into two ATM machines,” he said, adding that nothing was missing from the ATMs as the attempt failed.
Chandra is urging any eyewitnesses or persons with information pertaining to the attempted robbery to come forward to assist the police in their investigation.
The case would be investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft.
