SIBU: Sarawak Taekwondo Association (STA) deputy president Dato Lau Keung Chai has earned the distinction as the first Malaysian to receive the Letters of Commendation from Kukkiwon, the World Taekwondo Headquarters and home of World Taekwondo Academy in South Korea.

The honour was in recognition of his vast contribution to the development of taekwondo and the World Taekwondo Changmookwan.

Kukkiwon representative Mohd Abdullah Hakim @ Kim Yeong Ho handed over the two Letters of Commendation to Lau at the Main Gym of Sibu Rejang Taekwondo Club (RTC) recently.

Among those present at the presentation ceremony were RTC president Eric Michael Toyod and secretary Thomas Tang.

Hakim paid tribute to Lau for his dedication and committment to the sport and also his
generosity in supporting activities organised by Kukkiwon in South Korea.

“This is a big thank you from us and we believe his immense contributions towards the development of taekwondo would put the country in the forefront in international taekwondo championships.”

Hakim said a total of 206 countries in the world are registered with Taekwondo Kukkiwon which has over 8 million members.

“We are expanding and Kukkiwon will continue to rule the world with its martial art as it has become a widely accepted sport now.”

Lau responded by saying he would repay the faith placed in him by Kukkiwon and continue to work hard.

“Nothing will derail my plan to help taekwondo in Malaysia and Sarawak, in particular, reach greater heights,” he added.
