SIBU: Contractors not complying with the green card requirement will be hauled up to the Contractors’ Disciplinary Panel by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), which could see them disqualified from future projects.

In addition, workers without green cards and their employers could be fined up to RM5,000 under the soon-to-be enforced CIDB Act 520 (Amendments), warned Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof.

“Currently CIDB is bringing contractors not complying with green card requirement to the contractors’ disciplinary panel.

“Based on current circular, CIDB can suspend, revoke or cancel their registration and actions have been taken continuously.

“If their registration has been suspended, revoked or cancelled, automatically they are considered as unregistered contractors by law. They can’t be participating in tenders or undertake any construction work.

“Clients can refer to CIDB for their registration status,” Fadillah told The Borneo Post yesterday.

The Petra Jaya MP was responding to news report that 90 per cent of about 1,000 construction workers checked during the week-long Integrated Operation in Miri and Bintulu last week did not have CIDB green card.

The CIDB green card requirement is an integrated programme that involves the registration and accreditation of construction personnel to enhance safety levels at construction sites.

The operation inspected 43 construction sites and issued 50 notices for various offences.

CIDB Miri branch manager Rizuan Hamzah reportedly said the operation was to ensure construction sites adhere to stipulated rules and regulations.

Meanwhile, Fadillah assured that CIDB would see to it that continuous enforcement and stern actions are taken against errant contractors.

“At the same time CIDB is promoting and ensuring the success of the green card programme,” he said.
