Tie also obtained a bronze in the Boy’s 14-17 years feather weight category.

The trio received their cash incentive from SMK Chung Cheng Alumni Association vice-chairman Lau Kiung Pew at a victory dinner.

“It does not matter whether it is in taekwondo or in any other sports and it is always nice to see students from the school excelled in their co-curricular activities and bringing honors to the school,” Lau said.

The three students represented Rejang Taekwondo Club (RTC) at the Kuching outing.

Overall, RTC amassed nine gold, three silver and five bronze medals to record its best ever performance since its formation four years ago.

The other gold medalists from the 17-member RTC squad were Lau Yih Heng, Annie Lau Yih Jiung, Lucas Wong Sie Hong and Joyce Hii Ian Chyn.

The silver medalists were Serrena Hii Yii Lian, Samuel Wong Sie Jie and Laura Lee while Cherly Wong Sie Yee, Kong Chak Ming, Sydney Yew Yieng Ping and Jackie Ting Poh Chuan obtained bronze medals.

RTC secretary-cum-chief coach Thomas Tang had encouraging words for the exponents.

“If you continue to excel and get good results, there is every possibility that you will be picked for the 2016 Sukma.”

Tang added that all the gold medalists would be shortlisted for the 4th National Inter-Club Taekwondo Championship to be held at Likas Stadium, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in November.

Meanwhile, SMK Chung Chen Board of Directors vice chairman Tie Teck Hiong threw a challenge to the athletes.

“I promise to give you RM1,000 for each gold medal you garner at the national meet.”
