KUCHING: Sulaiman Ibrahim shot a second round 77 in the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Satellite Tour’s eighth leg at Kelab Golf Sarawak in Kuching yesterday to extend his lead to a massive nine strokes.

Sarawak’s professional golfer Sulaiman Ibrahim leads the PGM Satellite Tour’s eighth leg at Kelab Golf Sarawak by a massive nine strokes after round two.

Having opened with a seven-shot advantage after the first day in a field of just six players, of which the other five were amateurs, Sulaiman ended the second round on seven-over 151.

Meanwhile, Sarawak’s junior golfer Aziel Teo Ken Yi continued to lead the challenge of the amateurs with a 79, which marked a two-stroke improvement on his first round and was 16-over for the tournament with a 160 total.

Waili Abang remained third following a 79 of his own and was a shot back on 161.

Another state junior Aaron Lau Zhun Min’s 79 saw him climb into fourth place, ahead of Jordan H’ng Chih Chieh, who slipped to fifth after an 87 that had him on 170 for the three-day event that ends today.

S Muhammad was at the foot of the leaderboard on 171.

In contrast to Tuesday when he completed the first nine on even-par and without blemish on his card, Sulaiman had three bogeys yesterday and a double-bogey on the homeward stretch as the course played tougher – similar to when it hosted the Sarawak Championship last week.

Such was the degree of difficulty yesterday that none of the players on course registered a birdie.

The Satellite circuit serves as the feeder to the PGM Tour proper.

Speaking at the event, PGM Tour’s general manager Mior Abdul Rahman said: “Hopefully through this event, PGM can unearth potential talents from Sarawak. By participating in this satellite tour, the new talents are exposed to what is required to participate in the main tour.”
