KUCHING: An abandoned wooden structure in Batu Kawah — suspected of being a hideout for drug addicts — was reduced to ashes when a fire broke out yesterday.

Firefighters arrive at the abandoned structure in Batu Kawah to put out the fire.

The incident occurred around 10.40am, when members of the public spotted flames engulfing the structure and immediately notified the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).

Personnel from the Batu Lintang fire station were despatched to the scene to put out the fire and took less than 15 minutes to bring the situation under control.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A nearby resident, meanwhile, said the abandoned structure formerly housed a furniture factory but has been empty for the past two years.

Requesting anonymity, the resident claimed to have seen different groups of people entering the building at odd hours of the day, and believed the place could have been a den for drug addicts.

In an unrelated incident, a cyber cafe in Satok was slightly damaged after one of its computers caught fire early yesterday.

Bomba personnel were despatched to the scene after the department received a distress call at 7.18am that smoke was billowing out a window of the cyber cafe, which was located above a coffee shop.

The fire involved only one computer and damage to the premises was minimal.

No injuries were reported in the incident as the cyber cafe was empty at the time.
