MIRI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has been praised for giving due recognition to Malaysia Day.

Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing said Najib’s efforts in this respect should be appreciated.

“He is the only prime minister brave enough to make Sept 16 Malaysia Day (a public holiday), and I think Sarawakians and Sabahans should be grateful for that official recognition,” he told The Borneo Post recently.

Masing said Malaysia Day was only celebrated from 2010 and it took the fifth prime minister to accord it due recognition after 47 years.

He added that Najib is also a good listener, who should be given sufficient support by Sarawak to enable him to concentrate on his job of delivering what’s been promised.

Masing was commenting on Najib’s announcement during the Malaysia Day celebration here that National Day next year would be commemorated without mentioning the anniversary year. The prime minister said this was to put an end to the debate on whether the country should celebrate its sovereignty on Aug 31 or Sept 16.
