KOTA KINABALU: African countries are interested in doing business in Sabah and eager to strengthen relations in trade and investment as well as people-to-people relationship.

The High Commissioner of South Africa to Malaysia, Thami Mseleku, said a delegation would soon meet the Minister of Industries, the business people of the Malaysia International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Sabah branch and manufacturers in Sabah to explore business opportunities.

“We will see from the meeting if we can form partnerships,” he said after paying a courtesy call to the Head of State Tun Haji Juhar Datuk Haji Mahiruddin at the Istana Negeri here yesterday morning.

Thami led an official delegation of ambassadors and high commissioners from seven African countries, namely Kenya, Senegal, Lesotho, Ghana, Algeria and Swaziland.

He said African countries are interested in anything that they could offer Sabah and anything that Sabah could offer them.

“Whether in agro business, oil and gas or energy, we have our own strength that we can offer to Sabah. We will see the business people and they may be interested in what we have to offer because we are also interested in what they have to offer,” he said.

Juhar also received another courtesy call from a three-member delegation of the Bratisiava Regional Chamber of Slovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry led by its director, Juraj Majtan.

Majtan said this was their first visit to Sabah and expressed interest to try and make contacts and sign contracts in business ventures.

“I think there are more opportunities for mutual cooperation in specialized industries such as food,” he said.
