Don’t microwave your iPhone

A hoax advert claims that handset owners that upgrade to iOS8, Apple’s latest smartphone operating system, will be able to wirelessly recharge their iPhones in a matter of seconds by sticking them in the microwave.

The advert, which looks convincing upon first glance, is for something called ‘wave’. Described as Apple’s “latest and greatest” addition to iOS8, it’s purported to allow your handset to recharge itself via microwave frequencies. Just put it in a 700-watt microwave for 60 seconds and it’s good to go, outlines the video.

It turns out that some people skipped that school science class when the tutor demonstrated why one should never put metal objects in a microwave oven, and a number of people have fallen for the ad which has been cropping up on Twitter and in iPhone discussion forums over the past 24 hours.

Last year, when Apple launched the iOS7 update for iPhones, a number of consumers were duped by a similarly convincing ad that claimed the new software update made iPhones waterproof.

So, if you’ve just upgraded to the latest version of Apple’s iPhone software, or have just managed to get your hands on a new iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, please don’t put it in the microwave and please remember that a software update, no matter how comprehensive, is unable to change a device’s hardware. -AFP/ Relaxnews
