KUCHING: Sarawak Cup organisers have announced that Lea Sports Centre Sdn Bhd will be the tournament’s main sponsors this year.

Abu Bakar (centre) receives one of the sponsored items from Sim (third left) during sponsorship handing over ceremony at Yayasan Sarawak yesterday.

According to tournament director Datuk Mohd Abu Bakar Marzuki, every support given to the tournament counts and on behalf of the organisers, he would like to thank Lea Sports Centre for their kind contribution.

“They (Lea Sports Centre) have been very supportive of our events all this while. We look forward to more co-operation with them in the future,” he added.

It was at the Yayasan Sarawak headquarters, Jalan Sultan Tengah that Lea Sports Centre were unveiled as Sarawak Cup main sponsors during a ceremony yesterday.

Lea Sports Centre officials led by their managing director Raymond Sim, Sarawak Cup organising committee members and officials from the 13 teams competing in the tournament were among those who attended the ceremony.

The Sarawak Cup kicks off today (Sept 20) with the opening ceremony scheduled at the Samarahan Mini Stadium.

Meanwhile, Sibu Football Association (Sibu FA) president Fadzil Taman is not expecting much from his boys at the Sarawak Cup.

“I would be happy if they could qualify for the second round,” he said.

Sibu are in Group B with Armed Forces and Sri Aman in the first round.

The top two teams in the four groups will qualify for the quarter-finals.

Fadzil said his team lacked the depth to compete for the title.

“They rarely played together and the current squad was only assembled recently,” he explained, adding that most of the players were picked from the on-going Sibu Football League.

The Sarawak Cup this year is jointly organised by the Kuching Division Football Association (KDFA) and Samarahan Division Football Association (PBBS).

Other teams taking part included host Samarahan, Betong, Bintulu, Kapit, Kuching, Limbang, Miri, Mukah, Police, Sarikei, and Team Sukma 2016.
