Temenggong Lau hands over the Group A champion prize to Chua Ching Boon of SJK© Tung Hua.

SIBU: Creative art is a fine way for children to learn about making plans, choices and problem-solving, stated Temenggong Vincent Lau Lee Ming at the presentation of prizes of a Creative Colouring and Drawing Contest held at RH Hotel here yesterday.

He said every step involved making a decision: what colour to use, how to make a line and what size to make something.

“It is also hoped that through taking part in the Creative Colouring and Drawing Contest today, we are able to nurture the young with virtues of filial piety and respect for the elderly,” he said when addressing as the guest of honour at the closing ceremony cum.

More than 3,000 children took part in the contest organized by the Sarawak Stationers & Book Sellers Association.

It was divided into four categories, Group A (11-12 years), Group B (9-10 years), Group C (7-8 years) and Group D (5-6 years) — sponsored by AmMetLife.

The contest, named after its sponsor AmMetLife – a renowned life insurance company in the region, carried the theme, ‘Filial piety and respect for the elderly’.

Lau said in Confucian ideals, filial piety was one of the virtues to be held above all else: a respect for the parents and ancestors.

In somewhat general terms, he said, filial piety meant to be good to one’s parents; to take care of one’s parents; to show love, respect and support; and to display courtesy.

The same goes for respecting the elderly, Temenggong Lau said, while congratulated the committee members and all the members of Sarawak Stationers & Book Sellers Association as well as AmMetLife for organising the event with success.

He also thanked the teachers and parents for encouraging the children to participate in the contest.

“Children who have a higher than average exposure to art and the media for creating it, would develop positively in many aspects of their learning, in addition to their artistic talent,” Lau further stated.

In the contest, Chua Ching Boon of SJK© Tung Hua was first in Group A, Jasper Tang of SJK© Chung Hua, second and Tang Xiao Ling of SJK© Kwong Hua, third.

In Group B, Reena Yii of Dung Sang was first, Joyce Hii Shan Tze second and Daphne Yii Ying Ning, third.

In Group C, Liew Yu Thai of SJK© Chung Hua was first, Hii Nai Xien of SJK© Tung Hua, second and Audrey Wong of SJK© Sacred Heart, third.

Janelle Yong Jia Rong from Tadika Methodist Shiuan Daw was first in Group D, followed by Sharon Mok of Tadika Methodist Children’s Home, second and Doris Soon Chen Seng from Tadika Chung Sing, third.
