KUCHING: The Japanese Film Festival (JFF) is back to entertain Japanese film lovers with a four-day event to be held at CityONE Megamall’s Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) from Sept 25 to 28.

Sample of the redemption stamp.

And the rush begins for readers of The Borneo Post, who will be pleased to know that there will be 100 JFF complimentary passes up for grabs.

Organised by the Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur, this year’s 11th edition of the JFF will feature a variety of titles ranging from light-hearted mainstream fare to movies that have made the rounds in international film festivals in Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto and New York.

Heart-warming dramas and rib-tickling comedies dominate the 13-strong list, which includes five new releases making their Malaysian premiere.

Yuki Tanada’s exploration of grief and loss in ‘Mourning Recipe’’ boasts an award-winning cast with a Japan Academy Prize and Venice Film Festival Marco Mastroianni Award to their names while period action-farce ‘Samurai Hustle’ about a hapless clan leader forced to make an impossible journey to save his village was the top local film at the Japanese box office for three consecutive weeks.

Visitors to JFF will also find definite crowd-pleasers in Hirokazu Koreeda’s Cannes Jury Prize-winning ‘Like Father, Like Son’, Hayao Miyazaki’s swansong biopic ‘The Wind Rises’ and Isao Yukisada’s ‘The Round Table’.

In ‘Rent-a-Cat’, Mikako Ichikawa — who received the prestigious Silver St George in 2002 – plays a kooky woman who leases out her feline companions to lonely people whereas in ‘Fly, Dakota, Fly’, this will be the first ever film to depict the untold story of a British airplane that was forced to make an emergency landing on a remote Japanese island soon after the Allied victory in the Pacific.

Meanwhile, to redeem the 100 JFF complimentary passes, readers will be required to cut out the stamp attached to Japanese Film Festival 2014 featured in

thesundaypost today and collect the tickets at GSC CityOne Megamall (e-payment collection counter) from 11am onwards on Sept 22.

The redemption is based on a first come-first serve basis and each person will be entitled to redeem a maximum of four passes to any of the festival’s line-up of movies except ‘Initial D Legend 1: Awakening’ and ‘Saint Seiya Movie: Legend of Sanctuary’.
