KUCHING: Teamwork and motivation are critical during competition, according to Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

In addition to having intensive training before a competition, Lee also urged basketball players to participate in more competitions to sharpen their skills.

He was offering advice and words of encouragement to players at the conclusion of the Sarawak Open and Under-15 Basketball Championship at the Kota Sentosa Basketball Stadium at 7th Mile here on Friday night.

“The performance for basketball players in Sarawak has gone down, which causes some disappointment from members of the public, and this happens because some players are scattered around Sarawak.

“Thus, they are not subjected to the same training because

they are under a different coach during the training session,” Lee added during the closing ceremony held after the men’s final for the Datuk Amar Wee Hood Teck Cup.

Lee also stressed the vital role of coaches not only in training a team to win but also in team building.

The tournament served as a platform to select players to represent Sarawak in the Agung’s Cup and inter-state Under-15 championship later in the year.

Also present at the final matches and closing ceremony were Kuching Division Basketball Association (KDBA) president Richard Wee, KDBA honorary chairman Wong Tiong Hock and tournament organising chairman Wilson Tan.
