Ting and 17 student athletes win Hii awards

SIBU: Recipients of the 3rd edition of the Hii King Leng Top Sports Stars award (HKL-TSS) received their awards at the KTS Conference Room at Chinese Chamber of Commerce here yesterday.

Each received prize money of RM600, and for two year, plus a gold-plated commemorative medal.

The 17 athletes were Queenie Ting Kung Ni and Grace Wong Xiu Mei (SMK Tinggi Sarikei), Cindy Sui Yea Zhen (SMK Methodist, Sibu), Shirley Lau Kho Ee (SMK Bandar Sibu), Ngu Jiung Jing and Nee Gui Ping (SMK Chung Hua Sibu), Quek Lee Yong and Norris Foo (SMK Tabuan Jaya Sport School), Lucas Chieng Tiew Lik (SMK Sacred Heart), Winston Sai, Lau Jik Sing, Wong Jing Huei, Wong Kuang Won, Eric Tiong, Yii Tiu Hu, Wong Xiao Jing and Jenny La (SMK Tong Hua, Meradong).

Sibu Division Amateur Athletic Assoiciation (SDAAA) secretary Ting Siew Nguong received the Sports Volunteer Extraordinaire which is a new category this year.

He collected RM1,500 cash plus a gold-plated commemorative medal for his vast contributions towards sports development in the state Award initiator Dr Gregory Hii said 44 awards have been given out since 2012.

While happy to note an increasing of award applicants, he also called for more athletes from outside the central region to apply.

Meanwhile, Ting expressed his gratitude for the recognition and pledged to continue to work hard to improve the standard of sports in the state.

The Sarawak Schools Athletic Technical Committee chairman since 1997 has led the state contingent to victory in the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Track and Field Championships for a record 15 times.

He is also honorary secretary of Sibu Amateur Athletic Association and Sibu Basketball Association.
