BEKENU: Village folk here are urged to update themselves on new agricultural techniques, particularly in tapioca growing.

Bekenu assemblywoman Rosey Yunus said they, particularly those from her village, Kampung Pejuang Kelulit, should learn the new methods of growing tapioca for better yield, which had been developed by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

“Thus, farmers in the village should take the initiative to learn the improved technique developed by UPM,” she said yesterday.

With higher yield, they would have higher income, which would lead to better livelihood, she told them.

“Not only the tapioca yield will be increased but farmers can also become entrepreneurs by producing products made of tapioca, including snacks,” she said during the closing ceremony of a three-day family programme at Kampung Pejuang Kelulit here yesterday.

The programme was hosted by UPM in collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Consumerism and Cooperatives.

Also present at the event was UPM dean Prof Dr Japar Sidik Bujang.
