SIBU: Bukit Assek branch of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has become the first of the proposed new five to be established here as part of the party’s rejuvenation after two years of in-fighting.

These new units are set to take over the former Sibu branch, and will continue serving constituents through the administration centre at its Kampung Dato headquarters.

The committee of the new Bukit Assek branch, headed by Chieng Buong Toon, held its first annual general meeting (AGM) yesterday, followed by AGMs of its Youth and Women wings.

Chieng’s son Joseph leads the Youth section while Lau Hui Yiang heads the Women’s.

In his opening speech, Chieng said a new political force would rise among the five branches as party members strove to rebuild SUPP.

“There are more than 600 registered members and there are 256 attending this meeting; all show eagerness. I am happy about this,” he said, believing that having five branches instead of one would allow members a better platform here and at the same time, enable SUPP to groom more future leaders.

Chieng was confident that the new leadership under president Senator Dr Sim Kui Hian would provide the breakthrough for SUPP.

Meanwhile organising secretary Matthew Chen called on members to look forward and leave the past behind.

“To wrest back the Bukit Assek state seat is our goal.”
