SIBU: The sixth edition of ‘Sibu BASE Jump 2014’ attracted huge crowds from day one until its last day at Sibu Town Square Phase One yesterday.

BASE is an acronym that stands for four categories of fixed objects from which a person can jump from – buildings, antennae, spans (bridge) and earth (cliff).

People from all walks of life, young and old filled the main stage of Sibu Town Square to get a closer look at the daring BASE jumpers who came here from all over the world with parachutes rolled into parachute bags.

Taking part in the event were 45 BASE jumpers from 22 countries: Australia, Finland, France, Ireland, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, USA, Poland, Austria, the Netherlands, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Sweden, Ukraine, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Norway and Switzerland.

Spectator Isabella Jazz said she had not missed the event since day one.

“The event is extremely exciting, particularly as lady BASE jumpers are involved. These female base jumpers are daredevils with the guts to jump from a high building like Wisma Sanyan,” she said.

Isabella, who works with a private sector here, said a big thank you to the organiser for coming up with the world class event.

“If not for the organiser’s initiative, we would not have the opportunity to watch this magnificent event live,” she added.

Wong, who travelled all the way from Bintulu said she had come to Sibu with her family during this school break to enable her children to watch the BASE jump.

“Like any other kids, my kids love it a lot. The heart pumping moment when they jump from the state’s tallest building, Wisma Sanyan, delivers an adrenaline rush to the onlookers as well as the jumpers,” she added.

Wong, a housewife, said they would be coming back next year as her children want to watch it again.

The event was organised by Divisional Tourism Task Group (DTTG).
