8,763 entitled to AS 1Malaysia accounts

MIRI: A total of 8,763 participants of 1Malaysia People’s Trust Scheme (Sara 1Malaysia) from throughout Sarawak are entitled to receive the Amanah Saham 1Malaysia (AS 1Malaysia) accounts.

Out of that number, some 702 are from Miri which involves a total amount of RM3.51 million.

During the launch of the state-level Amanah Saham Bumiputera 2 (ASB 2) at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club (EVGCC) on Sunday, 10 individuals were selected by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) to receive the AS 1Malaysia investment books in a symbolic ceremony to launch the scheme in the city.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem presented the investment books to the recipients.

Also present were Adenan’s wife Datin Patinggi Puan Sri Jamilah Anu, PNB chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, PNB president cum PNB Group chief executive Tan Sri Datuk Seri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman, Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad executive director Datuk Idris Kechot and Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

The Sara 1 Malaysia introduced in January 2012 is a government initiative through the Ministry of Finance to tackle the impact caused by the increasing cost of living.

This scheme will indirectly help participants to cultivate the savings habit while providing them with good investment.

It aims to have the participation of 100,000 households with a total investment amount of RM500 million. Each of the participants will receive a financial loan of RM5,000.

Till Sept 18 this year, a total of 78,638 people from throughout the country have participated in the scheme. Participants will receive financial aid from any of the four financial institutions taking part in the scheme – Malayan Banking Berhad, CIMB Bank, RHB Bank and Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN).

The participants will then repay the loan in instalments to the relevant bank for 60 months or five years with a minimum payment of RM84. At the same time, scheme participants will receive an incentive of RM134 each for 60 months or five years (subject to conditions set) which will be credited to their AS 1Malaysia accounts.

The scheme is open to Malaysian citizens, aged 18 to 58 years.

It is also targeted at those with household income of RM500 ro RM3,000 and single mothers/fathers.

The other conditions are that applicants must not be bankrupt, not receiving assistance from the government under special schemes managed by Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad (ASNB) such as Hardcore Poverty Development Programme (PPRT), ASB Sejahtera and ASW 2020-Bandar.

The applicant’s investments in unit trust schemes managed by ASNB must not exceed RM10,000. Application for the scheme is still open until end of this year, depending on the availability of the AS 1Malaysia units.
