KUALA LUMPUR: The National Service Training Department(NSTP) in collaboration with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) will continue to ensure the safety of students and visitors in 81 camps nationwide for the next three years.
NSTP director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil said the collaboration established since 2008 was to convince parents that security and health matters were taken seriously during the national service training programmes.
“Since 2009, Niosh had carried out inspection on safety standards of the facilities utilised by trainees in order to prevent any untoward incidents,” he said at a press conference after signing a memorandum of understanding with Niosh here yesterday.
Niosh was represented by its Executive Director Rosli Hussin and Abdul Hadi signed on behalf of JLKN.
He said with this understanding, Niosh would assist JLKN management in developing a more systematic and independent Work Security and Safety Management System.
Niosh would also be responsible in the documentation and inspection of the physical training facilities available at training camps, he said.
“Audits and corrective recommendations would also be carried by Niosh in ensuring the safety of trainees during training,” he said.
At the ceremony Abdul Hadi launched the NSTP Safety and Work Policy and a book on Work Safety and Health Guidelines in NSTP camps.
Among others, the book covers the legal aspects, employees’ duties and responsibilities, risk management, first aid procedures and control guidelines risk, he said.
He added that so far there were no deaths while trainees underwent NS activities while most deaths were due to health reasons. — Bernama
