Appellant’s family members act aggressively towards reporter

KUCHING: The family members of an appellant – convicted of causing grievous hurt – acted aggressively towards a reporter at the lobby of the Kuching Court here yesterday.

Ahmad Warid was accompanied by family members during his appeal case against a five-year imprisonment conviction delivered by a Sessions Court judge in August.

The family members were apparently irritated by the presence of reporters and it is learnt that they grabbed the hand of one reporter.

However, the woman was not hurt in the incident.

A lawyer representing the appellant then called on the family members to calm down and they later apologised to the senior reporter.

Ahmad was convicted under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum of 20 years in jail and whipping.

He had used a broomstick to seriously injure 19-year-old Mohd Azwan Sabar, leaving the victim in a vegetative state.

The offence was committed around 10.10pm in front of a food centre at Kota Padawan on April 18 last year.

The appeal was heard in the High Court before Justice Datuk Yew Jen Kie, while Ahmad was represented by defence counsel Shankar Ram Asnani and Daniel Ling.

The hearing continues today.
