KOTA KINABALU: NGOs in Sabah have been urged to set up shelter homes for children who have become victims of neglect.

The call came from Beaufort MP Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun, who said that NGOs had set up shelter homes for children in the peninsula.

Azizah, who is the federal deputy minister of women, family and community development, spoke to reporters at a session with the media here Wednesday night.

She said the Welfare Department would extend co-operation to private hospitals which wanted to set up facilities to care for neglected children, provided the applications were made in accordance with procedure.

She also said that babies would not be abandoned if parents were responsible in raising children.

The ministry conducted various awareness programmes in the schools and organised family-

oriented programmes from time to time to check the abandoning of babies, she said.

Azizah praised media practitioners in Sabah for playing their role to change the mindset of the people for the better.

She said it was vital for the leaders, people and media to work together. — Bernama
