KUCHING: PRS Youth yesterday lauded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s address at the 69th United Nations General Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York last Sept 27.

They saw the speech as a good message to practise tolerance and moderation worldwide in regards to all religions and demonstrating moderation in the political process to ensure that no one is left outside the society.

The premier was also quoted as expressing his readiness to share with the world the moderation approach in Malaysia.

“While admiring the addresses especially when the prime minister was quoted on the needs to denounce jihadist movement, defeating not just the extremists but also their ideas and the must to advance the true Islam which was founded on the principles of peace, tolerance and respect,
PRS Youth hopes that the message will be preached and practised domestically within the Malaysian society and emulated globally as a universal principle to maintain peace and stability,” PRS Youth said in a statement issued here yesterday.

However, the youth wing also felt that currently issues pertaining to the confiscation of bibles, usage of the word ‘Allah’ and presence of religious chauvinists were still not being properly addressed and resolved in this country and in particular, the question on how the prime minister would address these matters domestically.

“Whatever decisions made by the prime minister pertaining to these issues did not legislate tolerance or moderation but merely arousing uneasy feelings among Malaysians,” it noted.

PRS Youth also believed that, prior to any call for worldwide moderation practice, the prime minister should consider re-looking at the unresolved religious issues in Malaysia first and only from there can he set an example of religious tolerance and moderation to the international communities.

The wing also stressed that the fundamental tools for moderation were basically to be more compromising, understanding and patient.

“However, constant provocation by certain groups will continue to render the society incapable in their judgments and tolerance.

“In this connection, PRS Youth urges the government, through the relevant authorities such as the police and multimedia enforcement agency, to make constant checks and to act promptly on any party(ies) using the name of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isis) or Islamic State (IS) in social media such as Facebook to incite extremism and seditious postings against other races or religions,” it said.
