SIBU: Competitors from the region are due to join an expected total of 120 archers for the 10th  Sarawak Indoor Archery Championship to be held at the Catholic High School Basketball Stadium here from Nov 22-24.

Secretary-general of Sarawak Archery Association (Pemasa) Chong Yap Jin said letters of invitation have been sent to archery associations of countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and Indonesia.

Teams from the Peninsular, Sabah, Labuan will join Pemasa members from Kuching, Sibu, Sarikei, Bintulu, Limbang and Lawas.

The three-day competition will include team, individual elimination rounds and gold medals matches.

Apart from medals, a cash prize of RM1,000 will be awarded to the first archer to hit 300 points out of 30 arrows in the 1st and 2nd half of the qualification round.

The Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing Challenge Cup will be given to the team collecting the highest total points in all the team events.

Chong, while mindful of the logistical difficulties of staging the event and finding a venue with seating accommodation, said organisers decided to go ahead in the hope that it would help generate interest among the archers here.

Outstanding local archers, he added, might be shortlisted to represent the state for the 2016 Sukma in Sarawak.

Meanwhile, the organising committee held its first meeting at the conference room of Sibu Resident‘s Office recently.

Sibu Resident Sim Kok Kee welcomed the decision to pick Sibu as the venue for the championship.

Event organising chairman Eric Tiong Chiong King expressed his gratitude to PEMASA for his appointment.
