Hii King Chiong joins UPP, calls for unity

MIRI: A local philanthropist Datuk Hii King Chiong has appealed to the Chinese community to put aside personal animosities in their common fight for the benefits of Sarawakians.

Hii who is the liaison person in setting up United People’s Party (UPP) northern region and also UPP Piasau branch pro tem chairman said the formation of UPP was to draw together social elites, integrate common political philosophy and serve the nation.

“Under UPP we shall bring together the opinions of the people. Step by step, we must be committed in upholding the Rules of Law, striving for the rights and interests of the people, implementing inclusive politics, building harmonious society and strengthening the dignity of the people as the basic guidelines.

“UPP welcomes all who share and believe in our political ideology and pursuits to join us.”

Hii spoke at length of UPP’s commitment to unify the people to fight for their rights and interests.

He noted that the Chinese communities are gradually keeping away from the country’s political mainstream which is upsetting and worrying.

He said he decided to join UPP because it was a platform for him to serve the people.

“We will bravely face the people, persevering honestly to serve the people, strive towards the common target in ‘Putting People First’, establish a ‘Confident Political Culture’ and make effort together with political partners of different platforms to cater to the needs of the people.”

Hii said Barisan Nasional (BN) should not refuse political parties that were willing to join the coalition to serve the people.

It is understood that UPP would be setting up six branches in the northern region, namely Piasau, Senadin, Pujut, Bekenu, Marudi and Limbang.

Present at the press conference were Cr Keith Chin, Cr Bruce Chai, Kapitan Haw Min Wai, Tiong Leong Chew and Dato Wong King Hiong and political secretary to the Chief Minister Suzanne Lee Tze Ha.
