Man fined for retaining stolen gadget

KUCHING: A man was fined RM1,500 in default three weeks’ jail by a Magistrates’ Court here yesterday after he pleaded guilty to retaining a stolen mini Ipad early this month.

Magistrate Portia Tham Ong Leng imposed the sentence on Izwan Shah Mohamad, 26, of Kampung Tabuan Lot and convicted him under Section 414 of the Penal Code after taking into consideration his mitigation, nature of the offence and public interest.

According to the facts of case read by ASP Austin Patrick Angkon yesterday, the Ipad was advertised online by the accused and the buyer brought it to the police station after he found something amiss with the gadget.

Following the tip-off and investigation, a team of police arrested the accused at the parking lot of a shopping mall at Jalan Song here around 5.30pm on Oct 1.

He settled the fine.

In an unrelated case, a 16-year-old youth claimed trial in a Magistrates’ Court to a charge of retaining a stolen motorcycle early this month.

The accused from Kampung Pinang Jawa appeared before Magistrate Zulhairil Sulaiman who released him on RM1,500 bail with his parent as surety pending disposal of the case. His father posted the bail.

The youth will be tried on Nov 28 under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a minimum six months to five years’ jail and possible fine upon conviction.

He allegedly committed the crime at Lorong Matang 10 here at 12.45pm on Oct 2.
