BUKIT MERTAJAM: The allocation of RM30 billion for development in Sabah and Sarawak clearly shows that the states are not marginalised.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri said from the 2015 Budget tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak Friday, it was clear that the government was concerned and committed in its efforts on developing Sabah and Sarawak.

She said Sabah and Sarawak were two big states and in need of major improvement in terms of infrastructure such as roads and electricity supply.

“I am delighted the 2015 Budget as it shows that the prime minister heard the demands of Sabah and Sarawak people,” she told reporters before opening the Information Empowering Young programme here, yesterday.

Nancy, who is also Batang Sadong MP, said infrastructure construction such as the Pan Borneo highway would facilitate access and connection for Sabah and Sarawak residents.

“Presently, Sarawak residents especially from Miri have to produce their passports to travel to Sabah as the only route connecting these two states is through Brunei and their passports need more than seven stampings before they reach the final destination,” she said.

Najib, who is also the Finance Minister, in presenting the Budget Friday said the government would construct the 1,663km Pan-Borneo Highway — 936km in Sarawak and 727km in Sabah at a cost of RM27 billion.

A total of RM262 million was proposed in the budget to cover the costs of transportation and enforcement of price control on essential goods, especially in Sabah and Sarawak, as well as RM70 million for padi subsidy to enhance the food supply chain in both states. — Bernama
