KOTA KINABALU: A police corporal was killed in an accident when the Perodua Alza vehicle he was travelling in went out of control and crashed into two lamp posts at Jalan Kepayan here on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Corporal Juman Lah, 35, serving with the General Operations Force (GOF) in Kinarut.

City police chief ACP M. Chandra said the deceased was sitting as a front passenger in the vehicle together with the 37-year-old driver, also a police corporal with the GOF in Kinarut, and a male passenger in the back seat.

They were reportedly travelling from Kota Kinabalu to Putatan when the fatal accident happened about 10.15pm near the Sabah police headquarters.

Chandra said the vehicle went out of control and crashed into a lamp post on the road divider before swerving onto the opposite lane and hitting another lamp post there.

All the three victims were pinned to their seats and the Fire and Rescue Department personnel freed them.

Both the driver, who sustained minor injuries, and backseat passenger, who broke his left leg, were rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2 for emergency treatment.

Juman, who was extricated an hour and a half later, was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1 but succumbed to severe internal injuries on the way.

Chandra added that the accident would be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
