KOTA KINABALU: Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs Datuk Hajaj Jainab Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Ahmad Ayed has urged the public to use the social media website Facebook for more than just socializing.

She said Facebook could be used by shoppers to share places selling items at fair prices.

“Let’s use Facebook to be more proactive,” she said at the launching of the Controlled Prices Scheme in conjunction with the Deepavali celebrations at the Putatan Servay Hypermarket here yesterday.

She added that when she looked into Facebook, she saw that people had a tendency to believe the news on the site, whether it was true or not.

“There are lots of products which have been exempted from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) but most people do not know about this,” Jainab told reporters, adding that she was willing to conduct a dialogue on any matters which the public were curious about, as answers would be given.

“I am sure that we can tackle this problem before April 2015,” she said.

Live chickens, mutton, grade-A, B, and C eggs, tomatoes, potatoes imported from China and red onions from India are among the products under the Controlled Prices Scheme held from Oct 18 to 27 which starts four days before Deepavali and ends five days after.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDN) will determine the the maximum price of goods from grocery shops and retailers from the pricing information and causes such as discussions with producers, importers, suppliers and retailers.

Also present at the event were Fredeck Kontod Chief Enforcement Officer for KPDN and Servay Hypermarket Operations Manager Mr Chai Chin Siong.
