Nicol storms into US Open final

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian squash queen Datuk Nicol David is edging closer in her quest to capture her third consecutive United States Open title after storming into the final of the tournament held at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

The world number one who captured the title in 2012 and 2013 was forced to sweat it out before defeating her nemesis Raneem El-Weleily from Egypt 11-3, 15-13, 6-11, 11-7 the semi-finals, held at the ASB Glass Court, late Friday.

“It feels great. I knew she would just keep coming back and hitting some amazing shots. I just really had to dig deep and come back to my own game and really stick to it. I’m pleased with the win,” Nicol was quoted as saying in the tournament website; www.usopensquash.com.

The result saw Nicol setup a final clash against 18-year old Egyptian teenage sensation, Nour El Sherbini  after the seventh seed defeated fourth seed, Camille Serme of France 7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-8 in the semis. — Bernama
