SIBU: A bus climbed atop a car and ran over it after a head-on collision before it continued charging to end up in a monsoon drain, killing the motorist instantly.

In the horrific accident at 4am yesterday, the car driven by a policeman from Sarikei was a total wreck.

Corporal Andrew Etam was badly crushed and died instantly.

Before the tragedy, Andrew, from Jalau, was driving back alone to Sarikei to report for work while the bus carrying 34 passengers and two drivers was heading to Sibu from Kuching.

All 36 passengers in the bus suffered only scratches and bruises. None suffered serious injuries but all had to climb out of the bus in shock.

Police here confirmed the fatal accident, saying they have detained the bus drivers for further investigation.

No further information was available on the cause of the accident, but the horrific accident gripped the townsfolk at daybreak in shock; as some were alerted by social media.

Countless photographs were posted on Facebook, Wechat and Whatsapp by travellers passing by the gory accident scene.

Police took the body of Andrew to hospital at daybreak.

The townsfolk were concerned because Andrew’s death came from the third fatal accident in Sibu since last Wednesday.

One of these occurred at Km27 Sibu-Tanjung Manis Road last Wednesday evening when four among seven passengers of a car were killed in a head-on collision.
