SIBU: A grandmother was killed in a road crash here when two cars collided head-on at Ling Kai Cheng Road in heavy rain at daybreak yesterday – the fourth tragic accident here in less than a week.

Both cars were badly damaged after the fatal accident at Ling Kai Cheng Road.

The tragedy occurred at 6.30am when two families in separate cars were sending their children to school. Grandma Hajizah Seruji died on the spot in the car driven by her daughter Nur Ahziah.

The 73-year-old who was seated in the front passenger seat succumbed to upper body injuries. The front portions of both cars were badly dented. Nur was pinned to her seat and it took firemen more than 30 minutes to free her. The 45-year-old broke her legs. The medic team rushed her to the hospital where she was admitted.

The tragedy occurred when both mother and daughter were returning to their home in Kampung Bahagiah Jaya after sending Nur’s children to school.

In the other car, housewife Huong Mee Sing was sending her daughter Wong Leh Ling and son Teck Kee to school. The 49-year-old woman also suffered upper body injuries. Her 16-year-old son Teck Kee suffered internal injuries and was bleeding from his forehead while her 19-year-old daughter Leh Ling suffered cuts and bruises.

After the accident, Leh Ling stayed by her younger brother. She looked confused and was calmed by a Good Samaritan woman – the wife of a policeman – who stopped to help when she and her husband were passing by.

The policeman informed his colleagues at the traffic section and called the hospital ambulance and Fire and Rescue Department while his wife stayed with the two shocked children.

She sheltered both of them from the rain with her umbrella.

Townsfolk were concerned over the four fatal accidents since last Wednesday, three of which occurred during downpours.

The first occurred last Wednesday when four of the seven passengers in a car were killed when their car collided head-on with a lorry at Km27 Sibu-Tanjung Manis Road.

The second occurred on Saturday night when a youth returning home from work was knocked down by a steamroller.

The third occurred on Sunday when a bus rode over a car in a head-on collision at Paradom Road, killing a policeman in the car instantly.
