18 years for culpable homicide

SIBU: A 29-year-old man was yesterday ordered by the Sessions Court here to stay behind bars for 18 years after he pleaded guilty to culpable homicide.

Matu Ukol killed Jana Jamit at a longhouse in Beleti, Ulu Sugai, Pakan, about 3.30pm on Dec 26 last year.

He was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code which carries imprisonment up to 20 years and a possible fine.

Earlier, the court was told that about 5.10pm on Dec 26 last year, the Julau police station received information on a murder incident at a longhouse in Ulu Sugai, Pakan.

Acting on information received, Inspector Rodhman Mansa led a team to the scene where they found a man sprawled in a pool of blood at the verandah of the longhouse.

Matu was arrested shortly thereafter.

Investigation revealed that Matu had slapped Jana’s wife, which led to a quarrel and the subsequent killing.

In mitigation, Matu said he regretted the killing and that he had to support his aging parents.

Matu has a previous conviction for extortion.
