9 injured in construction mishap

KUALA BELAIT: Nine people were injured after a structure which is a part of the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (Maktab Sains) project due to be completed next year partially collapsed last night, Brudirect reported.

Fire and Rescue Department received a call from the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital regarding the incident at 1937 hours yesterday.

According to the Assistant Superintendent of the Kuala Belait Fire Station Zulkeflee Awg Alimas, two fire trucks and twelve personnel led by the Commanding Officer of Company ‘B’ Belait District Abd Azis Hj Mohammad were immediately dispatched. Paramedics and police personnel were also present at the scene.

Fire and Rescue personnel removed some of the fallen structure to ensure that no one was left trapped under the debris. All workers at the site were accounted for.

Out of the one hundred and twenty four people, nine were found with injuries to their legs, fingers and arms. They were admitted to Suri Seri Begawan Hospital for further treatment.

As of press time, the cause of the structural collapse has yet to be established and the incident is still under investigation.

This mishap is the second of its kind involving construction workers, the first of which occurred sometime on September 30 last month where in Jangsak, a man was killed after he was crushed to death underneath an excavator.
